1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Read passage
4Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord.
6There are various kinds of workings, but the same God who works all things in all.
7But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all.
8For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
9to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
10and to another workings of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of languages, and to another the interpretation of languages.
11But the one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires.
1 Corinthians 13:8-13 Read passage
8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with.
9For we know in part and we prophesy in part;
10but when that which is complete has come, then that which is partial will be done away with.
11When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away childish things.
12For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.
13But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.
Ephesians 2:19-22 Read passage
19So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God,
20being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;
21in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;
22in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.
Read this in context.
In 1 Corinthians 12–14, Paul addresses a church that was prizing dramatic displays of speaking in tongues while neglecting love and mutual edification. He insists that gifts are measured by love and service to the body.
What we can observe.
First Corinthians 12:7 states that the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. Chapter 13:1-3 says gifts without love accomplish nothing. Verses 8-10 speak of prophecies and tongues ceasing when completeness arrives.
A reading to consider.
Across every view, the New Testament’s primary test of the Spirit’s work is not spectacle, but Christlike love, truth, and the building up of neighbors.
Where Christians differ.
Continuationist (charismatic, Pentecostal, and many evangelical) readers hold that all gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 remain available until Christ’s return, reading “the perfect” in 13:10 as the second coming. Cessationist readers hold that foundational apostolic sign gifts (Ephesians 2:20; Hebrews 2:3-4) served the church’s founding era, while God still heals and answers prayer in response to petition.
